Still Here!

Before I begin telling this next story I want to say that I am totally fine. While what I am about to write was scary, I am very lucky in that it was not much worse. Now that it is two weeks later I sit here in good mental and physical health, with only a few scars to show for my experience. With that being said…

I was in Lomé, the capitol of Togo, two weeks ago to do some work. The first night I was there I went to a bar a few blocks from both the Peace Corps office and my hotel with a couple friends. It was a normal evening with us drinking a couple beers and complaining about our parasites. Around 12:30am the last four of us still at the bar decided to walk back to the hotel we were all staying in. We walked the first couple blocks down the dark sandy road. As we were walking past the Peace Corps office a young guy came up behind us and tried to start talking to us. Living here you get very used to people trying to talk to you, and we all continued walking. After a few more steps I felt something poke me in the back.

I turned around to see the kid motioning to the small bag I held with his left hand and a full size machete in his right. I looked up from this attack at the lights glowing on the high security walls of my US Government employer and thought, "Guards! Walls! Safety!" I started screaming in both French and English, "HELP ME! HELP ME!" And ran to the metal door next to the main guard booth. I had visions of guards with large sticks streaming out the door, coming to my aid. I reached the stoop next to the door, continued to yell and turned to face my assailant. I watched in horror as he brought the machete down twice on my left arm.

At this point I don’t remember much of what happened next. I know I stood there for some amount of time trying to call someone to my aid. I know he hit me a few more times with the machete.

The attacker eventually gave up, turned around, and hopped on the back of a motorcycle manned by an accomplice.

I then walked back and found my friends who had run the other direction and been sheltered two blocks down by a shop owner who had heard my screams and opened his door. With the protection of the shop keeper and his brother we walked back to our hotel.

I came out of the entire experience with two gashes on my left arm, one on my upper shoulder blade, one on my lower back, and two on my left thigh. I’m not totally sure if the blade was dull, the attacker wasn’t 100% into it, or if it was just my iron like physique that kept the wounds from being worse.

I got really lucky. I know that. But in the end I figure that this sort of event is the price that I have to pay to live the amazingly interesting life that I do. These sort of things happen. I’m just thankful I’m still alive.

Glad that you're still alive man, even though I have NO IDEA who you are.See,some real martial arts training and a handy pistol can help in the most unusual locales, man.Keep working on your "iron physique" lol, because if you have to do this again...it might not turn out so well.

Forgive me for asking, but what was in your bag that was worth risking getting anything from a slight cut to losing your life?

HOLY CRAP (the response of choice)! I've read several of your other blogs - but this one rules them all from an action/adventure sort of perspective.

I too have done some travel and always have concerns about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Of course sometimes (like in this case) the wrong place and wrong time can provide a story and insights into a struggling nation and its youth.

Glad to hear you're ok - looking forward to buying your book. Seriously - you should write a book!

I have a Canadian friend (expat) who works in Taiwain who has the most amazing life story I've ever heard and I swore secrecy. Your story ranks number 2 to his. I wish I could share why.

That's really insane...it kind of scares me to think of it though because a good friend of mine recently went to Africa for Christmas. You're lucky to walk away from something like that, and even more respectable is the fact that you are still serving over there after things like that happen. Call me a wuss, but an encounter with a machete would be my first sign to go home! Just teasing, but stay safe and keep up the good work!

Two questions:

1. Why didn't you fight? Why just stand there and let yourself get hacked up like a sheep? I mean, could you possibly have come out of it any worse if you had fought? Most likely the guy would have run away sooner. You are very, very lucky. A sharp machete could have easily taken your arm off.

2. What kind of friends are those who ran in the other direction and left you to be chopped up by a mugger? With friends like that, who needs enemies?

Hi Aaron

Having been to Lomé a couple of times I was quite interested in your story. Read this shortly after I got back. Thinking how scary that would have been. People don't realize that you were likely walking down a road with no lights. To top it off you wouldn't want to have a flashlight-draw attention to your self.

Will be in Lomé again this summer. Your experience will definately be in the back of my mind when I go home after a few beers.

Never run screaming into a corner, run only if you are sure you can outrun them or give them everything calmly or try and kill them. When being sized up by a thief it's best to take action before they commit to attacking. That action whatever it maybe, confronting, picking up a rock, attacking or even calmly talking to them is better than running screaming, that triggers the urge to kill, but I guess you know that now. ;-) Glad you came out of it so well. You we lucky, but a simple weapon or some defense training, even just one move done right would have giving you some options. Have a boxer show you how to punch with your body weight and aim for the throat or swing your arm to the groin with body weight behind it, you don't have to make fighting your life, just one or two moves done right will save your life. God gave you a sceond chance, don't waste it. Next time you might have to defend your new bride.
